Love this post. Everyone has a dream job they would love to aspire to....why not plan for it. Nothing changes if you keep doing the same daily routine. If you love your work---it seems like play. So do something different and get a friend, a coach or someone to help light that fire and move you towards your dream job.

[...] It’s time for innovation and maybe even a reset. I’m not talking just businesses, I mean you and me too. You might be thinking: “In this economy I better stay put where I have some security.” Buddy, with 10%+ unemployment and Obama saying things are even worse than they earlier projected, better think again. Nobody’s job is safe. There’s no time like to present to re-invent yourself and do something you’ve really wanted to do… unless of course you are already doing it, then, um, good for you! But, maybe even you could make some changes while everyone is kind of sitting back and waiting to see what happens. Here’s 7 reasons to change careers I thought was very appropriate (still! since it was written way back in April 2008): http://www.escapefromcorporate.com/career-change-recession/ [...]

People shouldn't underestimate the opportunity to actually take a break at this time as well and pursue non-work related dreams. Take some classes you've always wanted to do or even travel to places you've always wanted to see! You can build great skills that will only enhance your marketability when you re-enter the work force. And maybe you'll find some new life and job goals to pursue!

I couldn't agree more - even now since you wrote this! In this climate: Good people keep their jobs. Great people find better jobs.
Business has to continue - it can't all grind to a halt. OK, the discretionary projects get put on hold but organizations must keep innovating and growing to stay alive!
Recession is a golden opportunity, just like you say, for Great People to go where they are most needed and make the greatest contribution.

So much of what I'm reading and seeing is pointing to starting your own business or at least striking out on your own to being the only job security out there. So what do you all think it says about those who continue to work in corporate environments?

I think working for yourself is a key. They say its not for everybody, but if push came to shove, I bet 95% of people would be able to make it work.

I particularly like tip #7, too true.

One point I like to emphasize is that people shouldn't quit before beginning a job search. An employed job seeker is more valuable to recruiters and companies alike.

I Stumbled this for you:
