Dan's a good example of Law #2 from Ries & Trout's 1994 book, "The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing".

Law #2: If you can't be first in a category, set up a new category you can be first in.

Although this may seem 'old school' marketing, it's very much a complement to how Dan has gone about genuinely positioning himself as 'top of mind' for a particular marketplace when it comes to personal branding.

Fries & Trout make the point very well with Law #1 (go get the book!), where the name of the first person to fly the Atlantic solo is remembered, but the 2nd guy is mostly forgotten.

And they introduce Law #2 with: "What's the name of the third person to fly the Atlantic solo?"
(Hint: Her first name's Amelia.)

For me, the branding message comes down to: Play to your strengths and find ways to constructively show people what you are doing and what you can do.

I had heard about this book and thank you for making it come alive. It's headed to my Kindle this evening. Glad I found your information!
