Nice piece of advise – you have practically mentioned all points. I’ve been freelance for about 20 years, and even worked abroad in France, offering private and corporate clients diverse services including translations and coaching, on a ‘contract’ basis. There are advantages to being freelance as you say, and it’s nice being your own boss. On the other hand, yes indeed, there is time management, PR, budget, invoicing, etc, which with time becomes common sense.

Great tips for all people laid off of thinking of freelancing. The good thing about freelancing is that you can try it out on the side before leaving an unsatisfying job. Many freelance jobs have one or two deliverables and then you are on to the next job.

I do agree that you need to always do your best when working for Guru.com or eLance.com because the better your employer feedback on your performance, the more jobs you will be considered for. Sometimes, the employer may want to keep the freelancer steadily employed so there are many possibilities out there.

Hi Pamela, I am so glad to see that the changes in corporate America did not go unmentioned in your excellent article. I am not a proponent of wallowing in the past- simply grateful that lessons learned do not get deleted from our, somewhat limited, collective memory.
